As a coal mining town, Mount Carmel needed railways. Three of the nation's major railroad companies extended branches into the borough. These included the Pennsylvania (PRR), the Reading (RRR), and the Lehigh Valley (LVRR). With these connections coal from our little town was shipped to everywhere on the East Coast, most importantly: New York City and Philadelphia. Our railroad crossing sign commemorates the many connections throughout the Anthracite Coal Regions.
